Statement on DoubleTree Unionization Efforts

December 2, 2021
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“As a native of West Berkeley and City Councilmember representing half of the Berkeley Marina, I am in full support of the efforts by employees at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel to obtain a union contract. Hospitality and service workers are the backbone of our local economy, and their work at DoubleTree provides vital tax revenue to maintain operations at the Marina. As businesses recover from the COVID-19 lockdowns and the City plans for a revitalized Marina, it is critical to ensure that workers reap the benefits of an economic rebound with higher wages and stronger benefits. All workers deserve the fair working conditions, job security, and collective power that a union can provide. I applaud the organizers at Unite Here for their important work.

“As President Biden has said, the best way for employers to recover from staffing shortages is to pay workers more. I urge DoubleTree management and the hotel industry at large to heed his sage advice.”
