Councilmember Taplin Statement on Supreme Court Overturning Roe v. Wade

I am shocked and saddened by today’s news of the US Supreme Court overturning the Roe decision. It was always clear that this Trumpist-majority Supreme Court would move swiftly to end reproductive rights and many other important civil rights, but even for those who saw it coming, this is devastating. There is no duty more sacred for elected leaders than to uphold the right to bodily autonomy. I am resolved to fight for that right, and I stand in solidarity with all women and people who can become pregnant.

This Supreme Court knows as much as we do that banning abortion will cause the greatest  harm to the poorest and most vulnerable among us. The Court’s decision will put lives at risk. Cruelty is the point, and many are painfully feeling that point right now.

The Right has worked for decades to undo material progress and drag us back to a dark age where women, LGBTQ people, and communities of color, are stripped of their rights. We must not let them win. Our struggle for a just society is the struggle for sovereignty over our bodies, justice for our communities, and to live without fear of harm or persecution. I call on all my fellow elected officials in the Democratic Party, at every level of government, to recommit ourselves to this fight.
